New York Times bestseller

International bestseller

Named one of the top health and wellness books for 2016 by MindBodyGreen

Depression is not a disease. It is a symptom.

Recent years have seen a shocking increase in antidepressant use the world over, with 1 in 4 women starting their day with medication. These drugs have steadily become the panacea for everything from grief, irritability, panic attacks, to insomnia, PMS, and stress.  But the truth is, what women really need can’t be found at a pharmacy.

According to Dr. Kelly Brogan, antidepressants not only overpromise and underdeliver, but their use may permanently disable the body’s self-healing potential. We need a new paradigm: The best way to heal the mind is to heal the whole body.

In this groundbreaking, science-based and holistic approach, Dr. Brogan shatters the mythology conventional medicine has built around the causes and treatment of depression. Based on her expert interpretation of published medical findings, combined with years of experience from her clinical practice, Dr. Brogan illuminates the true cause of depression: it is not simply a chemical imbalance, but a lifestyle crisis that demands a reset. It is a signal that the interconnected systems in the body are out of balance – from blood sugar, to gut health, to thyroid function– and inflammation is at the root.

A Mind of Your Own offers an achievable, step-by-step 30-day action plan—including powerful dietary interventions, targeted nutrient support, detoxification, sleep, and stress reframing techniques—women can use to heal their bodies, alleviate inflammation, and feel like themselves again without a single prescription.

Bold, brave, and revolutionary, A Mind of Your Own takes readers on a journey of self-empowerment for radical transformation that goes far beyond symptom relief.

Brogan''s "shocking" truth about depression is to rule out any underlying physiological causes, eat well, exercise, meditation, yoga, nutrition and walah! Cured! (eye roll) It''s a purely biophysical approach that says eat well, live well, and medications are all bad mmmkay?
It doesn''t talk about coping with trauma, abuse, grief or loss, and actually trivializes them in favor of a purely physiological model as though diet and exercise will somehow magically make your real life problems and pain go away. I did find it rather amusing, I lie, I found it hysterical, that there''s an entire section dedicated to telling a depressed person to get sleep, with complete disregard for depressives that do nothing BUT sleep. Next, a section dedicated to exercise ….patronizing at this point.
The last section on lifestyle should just suggest plain old yoga, plain and simple. However, she specifically recommends Kundalini Yoga, basically just because she personally likes it. She claims on the Joe Rogan podcast that it "literally rewired my entire nervous system and now I don''t feel stress about anything." Seems fantastical, fluffy, and new agey enough, but for the laymen; let me explain what this very ancient, spiritual practice that westerners have made trendy, entails.
"Yogis believe that when the Kundalini awakens, the door of the Sushumna (an energy conduit) is opened and the Kundalini ascends through the six chakras (alleged energy centers) until it reaches the crown chakra at the top of the head. When it reaches this height, it unites with Lord Shiva (the god of destruction) whose consort is Shakti. This union supposedly brings about the joy of “Blissful Beatitude.”
There is also what''s called Kundalini syndrome. Awakened Kundalini energy can cause a spiritual crises. Symptoms are ...Ding Ding Ding ...Depression, hallucinations, breaking with reality, depersonalization, and a variety of other physical symptoms.
Clearly, our dear Doctor here is wayyyy out of her field of expertise and knowledge to be recommending ancient spiritual practices and wording them as new age fluff.
My last point is the adamant anti-serotonin theory that serotonin plays no role in depression. Clearly our "woke" Dr. missed all the research on psychedelics like psilocybin, ayahuasca etc.. and their powerful effects on serotonin, alleviating depression, and neuroplasticity. Then again, she''s not concerned so much about healing emotional trauma and she badly wants to throw that pesky serotonin theory out the window.
Dr. Brogan says that depression is just a side effect for an underlying physical condition like inflammation or leaky gut. I can assure you that depression is very real, complex, condition and those suffering from dysthymia, chronic persistent depression, or severe debilitating depression will place this book on the heap with all the other "miracle cure" books that didn''t work.
Interesting to see hat she''s extorting folks and putting that money to good use such as artificially inflating high reviews and sending flying monkeys at negative reviews.

I got this book and followed Dr. Brogan''s instructions because I wanted to take a "natural approach" to treating depression and anxiety symptoms. I stopped taking the "nasty little pill" (birth control) and slowly tapered off my antidepressant. I followed the diet, did the kundalini yoga, and meditated according to protocol. Where did it land me? In the worst, most debilitating, most excruciating suicidal depression of my adult life. I stuck with the protocol for months and months, hoping it would finally "work," but I only got worse. Luckily I have a wonderful family who supported me through this nightmare. At the urging of my fantastic family physician, I finally went back on the antidepressant. At first I felt like a failure, but within 6 weeks, the depression lifted and I had my life back again. It''s been two years back on my antidepressant (I also exercise regularly, eat well, and meditate daily) and I''ve never felt better. I now accept that while a "natural" approach may work for some, it doesn''t work for all. I think that it is irresponsible for Dr. Brogan to suggest that all pharmaceuticals are bad- they gave me my life back!

This book quite literally changed the trajectory of my family''s health. I stumbled across this book seeking answers to help my daughter who was struggling with anxiety, depression and an eating disorder. The fact that Kelly is a trained psychiatrist who has rejected drugs as a viable therapy to treat her patients intrigued me. The anti-depressant that our daughter''s psychiatrist prescribed wasn''t working so she just kept upping the dose until our daughter self-harmed. At that point an anti-psychotic drug was additionally prescribed, allegedly because she was too underweight for the prescribed SSRI drug to work properly. This med is one that is usually prescribed for schizophrenia. (our daughter is not schizophrenic). This med didn''t do anything either so the doc upped the dosage on it too. At that point, our daughter self-harmed again while becoming almost catatonic in her demeanor. What was going on!! Instinctively I knew the eating disorder was not going to be cured until the underlying depression and anxiety were dealt with yet not one of her professional doctors seemed concerned with getting to the root cause of these, they only wanted to throw more drugs at the symptoms. As I read Kelly Brogan''s book, I became aware that our experience with her psychiatrist and other doctors was the norm, not the exception and the more I read, the angrier I became. The very people we were trusting our daughter''s life to were causing more harm than good. Much to the doctors'' stern objections, we pulled our daughter off her meds and began feeding her a limited version of Kelly''s protocol. Due to the complications that an eating disorder brought to the equation, we didn''t want to give her excuses to restrict food so we didn''t completely limit sugar and dairy, but our family went gluten-free, organic, grass-fed beef and purged the house of most of our processed food, chemical cleaners and commercial beauty supplies. In addition we started taking supplements and herbs. Within a week or two, we began seeing glimpses of our formerly happy, joyful child. We are now about two months in on this new lifestyle, our daughter is generally happy and at peace, she is gaining weight, her father and I have lost some excess weight, we both have less aches and pains, less desire for sugar, breads, alcohol and caffeine. My blood glucose levels are in a healthier range and we all have more energy and vitality. I am convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt that natural, organic eating and living that this book advocates is the key to helping our daughter overcome her depression and anxiety without drugs and really for everyone to live a healthier, more vibrant life. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has that still, small, but persistent voice in their heads that is telling them drugs aren''t the answer and there has to be a better way. There is, we are living it, amazed at the difference in our family and will never go back!

As a patient of Dr. Brogans, I can tell you that her methods work. The people writing 1 star reviews have clearly never spent weeks of their life confined in a mental hospital, lost jobs, relationships, financial stability or been told they would need to be on medicine for the rest of their life that causes weight gain, kills your thyroid and may result in kidney failure. If they had, they would have been searching and praying for answers like I did for the 14 years until I found Dr. Brogan.

I''d researched everything I could on alternative treatment for bipolar 1 disorder and done what I could for myself. Having had psychotic breaks even on medication, I knew I needed all of the help I could get. I had implemented and was aware of many of the things she discusses in her book, but never quite sure exactly what I needed. I waited for months to get into see her and it was truly one of the greatest blessings of my life to begin a doctor-patient relationship with her.

Her knowledge is only as good as your ability to try it out for yourself. It hasn''t been easy to do all the things she recommends and I''m still working on these changes in my life. I''m gluten free, dairy free and still working on sugar free and eating less grains. I take coffee enemas and cannot emphasize how much they do for one''s well being. I''m doing kundalini yoga 3 hours a week and exercising regularly. My vitamin D levels are finally normal and I even gave myself B12 shots. I take about 40 supplements a day. Is it easy to do all of this? Am I doing it perfectly? No and no, but I''m trying, I''m progressing. I feel calm, I feel stable and I feel like I can have a future without being medicated forever.

I''m sharing all of this publicly because if I can encourage one depressed, anxious or bipolar person to try her methods and to feel better, I would feel good about that. Do not go off of your medication without a doctor''s supervision. It doesn''t have to be an all or nothing proposition, one could do her methods while on medication.

As for the people writing 1 star reviews because they do not agree with her stance on vaccines or believe that anti-depressants are the only answer. Don''t throw the baby out with the bath water. Do you agree with every belief of your political party or your religion - have you ever disagreed with some information, but agreed with others? Have you found a vaccine administering doctor who will tell you something other than take a pill for your mental illness?

As someone who knows Dr. Brogan personally and trusts her with my own healthcare, I can say she deeply cares about the people she is writing this book for and her patients. She is one of the most warm and empathetic doctors I''ve ever seen. Baby step her suggestions if you have to, try a little bit at a time and see if they can help you to feel better. There is hope.

The author really had me going until I arrived at her anti-vaccination claims. She mentions in chapter 5 (hoping her naive readers won’t bother to review her footnotes) an article Snopes labeled as “unproven” that
“Obama Grants Immunity to CDC Whistleblower on Measles Vaccine Link to Autism.” That same “whistleblower” who actually rejects that label, said “I want to be absolutely clear that I believe vaccines have saved and continue to save countless lives. I would never suggest that any parent avoid vaccinating children of any race. Vaccines prevent serious diseases, and the risks associated with their administration are vastly outweighed by their individual and societal benefits.“ Shame on the author and publisher for spreading misinformation. You should have stuck with the point of your book which was that anti-depressants carry significant risks.

As a former research scientist and (now) therapist, I find this book to be fully consistent with the current research. Its important to know that it takes over 15 years for what is known from research to make it down to your doctor. That is, your average doctor is 15 years out of date, prescribing antidepressants like candy when they work no better than placebo (see The Emperor''s New Drugs by Dr Irving Kirsch) and can be very difficult to stop because of potentially very serious withdrawal effects. Dr Brogan, like other functional medicine M.D.''s such as Mark Hyman and neurologist David Perlmutter, address the CAUSE of depression which is primarily related to inflammation, hormone imbalance, and stress (which affects the body). And so much is centered on the gut (see also Brain Maker by Dr Perlmutter). The good news is that you, not your doctor, have the power to heal your depression. Dr Brogan gives a path out of depression, and hopefully you can find a health care provider such as a functional medicine M.D. or a naturopathic doctor (N.D.) who can assist you in your recovery. Depression is not a life-long illness, and it is possible to fully recover. I''ve been depression-free for over 10 years after 19 years of recurring clinical suicidal depression. My recovery started when I got off the medications slowly (very important, as Dr Brogan says, to wean off SLOWLY). I''ve never been better and the diet I use, similar to Dr Brogan''s, as well as meditation, has kept me depression-free for many years, even after losing my spouse to cancer. So it is possible to recover and live a normal life -- don''t let some doctor label you mentally ill for life. Heal the cause rather than try a dangerous anti-depressant band-aid. Depression is a symptom, not a disease. It can be caused by any number of nutritional deficiencies, toxicity (such as mercury or lead), and/or a leaky gut. As Dr Brogan says, start with what you eat -- food is medicine.

There is research sites in the book. But like most arguements there is evidence for both sides. If I had read this in a book store I wouldn''t have purchased...
What I agree with:
Healthier diets
Less medication
Lifestyle changes
The things I had issues with:
Not all medication is satan. I''m on birth control. And she makes it seem like I can never get over my struggles because of that. Not every person is the same. I found mostly through lifestyle and positive changes in my relationships (my partner, my family) the rest been a huge improvement. Dont compromise your views to fit one book. I dont want kids so I''m not going off birth control, that''s my choice. It''s the right choice for me. And my mental state is still wonderful. I''m world''s better than if accidentally had a child I didn''t want.

I also wish she talked about how important going out is. When I was more depressed I found myself staying inside and doing nothing. So I felt bad. So I wouldn''t do anything. And it was a bad cycle. But now I do things and visit people. I hike, rock climb, paint, go to game nights, volunteer at animal shelters. It''s done so much for me. Just having a positive attitude and trying to make those changes and not just expecting medicines to fix it. Some cases they might help, and I understand that. But maybe try natural alternatives and lifestyle adjustments first.

Unfortunately the book was too black and white for me. Everyone is different and this book only addresses the points she wants to make with the side of research she choose to use.

This book has literally changed my life! Was going through a difficult time with chronic illness that resulted in depression and anxiety symptoms. Unlike other books this does not label you as a mentally ill person but looks at the root causes of mental and physical health issues, that can be addressed and reversed with a holistic treatment approach. I feel better than ever, off the antidepressants (that I shouldn''t have taken in the first place) and much more in tune with my body and mind. Would recommend this book to everyone - ''ill or healthy''.

The Silent Tragedy in Health Care Today

By Kelly Brogan, M.D., Author of A Mind of Your Own.

A silent tragedy in the history of modern health care is happening right now in America, but no one is talking about it. We have been told a story of depression: that it is caused by a chemical imbalance and cured by a chemical fix—a prescription. More than 30 million of us take antidepressants, including one in seven women (one in four women in their forties and fifties). Millions more—maybe you—are tempted to try them to end chronic, unyielding distress, irritability, and feeling emotionally flat—trapped by an exhausting, unshakable inner agitation.

It is time to let go of this false narrative and take a fresh look at where science is leading us. Before you try an antidepressant, I implore you to read this book. And if you do currently take these drugs, then I have an important message for you, too. Let me give you a primer.

Believe it or not:

- In six decades, not a single study has proven that depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain.

- The serotonin theory of depression is a myth that has been supported by the manipulation of data and an echo chamber of industry and media rhetoric.

- Depression is not a genetic disease. It is an epigenetic syndrome. In 2003, a study published in Science suggested that those with genetic variation in their serotonin transporter were three times more likely to be depressed. But six years later this idea was wiped out by a meta-analysis of 14,000 patients published in the Journal of the American Medical Association that denied such an association.

- Depression is often an inflammatory condition, a manifestation of irregularities in the body that can start far away from the brain and are not associated with the simplistic model of so-called 'chemical imbalances'.

- Depression is an opportunity. It is a sign for us to stop and figure out what's causing our imbalance.

The human body interacts in its environment with deep intelligence. Your body creates symptoms for a reason. We usually suppress these symptoms with medication, but that is like turning off the smoke alarm when you have a fire going on.

I get the allure of the quick fix cure via a drug. I used to believe in the magic pill. Then, after my residency and fellowship training, I took a sharp turn.

I have spent years voraciously researching to find better health solutions for women, hungry for the truth about what works and what doesn't. In my research and work with patients—people just like you—I've been analyzing data and connecting the dots.

First we have to ask why you are feeling the way you are feeling, and the sources of your symptoms may surprise you. It may be your food, your gut, your thyroid, or even your go-to pain reliever. I continue to be amazed at the power of the body to heal, after decades of abuse by our lifestyles, within time frames as short as thirty days.

My goal is to:

- Help you change the beliefs we've all been fed by a system that is not really focused on wellness, but on symptom suppression—and profit.

- Help you discover your body's innate ability to recalibrate, reset, and recharge so you can heal.

- Give you simple, highly practical steps in a comprehensive plan that activates your own healing power so you can start feel freer and healthier in thirty days or less.

Because you deserve to experience a mind of your own.
